Hotel Zoo Berlin - Best City Hotel out of Europe's 100 finest hotels
Which hotel would you recommend to friends? That was the question before the judging panel in Geo Saison’s annual hotel ranking, which is now in its eleventh year. The panel applied this subjective criterion to make awards in ten different categories. The complete ranking can be seen in the current issue of GEO SAISON.
Hotel Zoo in Berlin, renovated by APPIA, has once again been awarded a prize: this time in the ‘BEST CITY HOTEL’ category.
At APPIA, we are pleased to see this attractive, exemplary hotel meeting with repeated success. APPIA played a significant role in the full renovation of the hotel and was tasked with the complete refurbishment of the rooms, suites and public areas.

Hotel Zoo, Berlin – Hotel property of the year 2015
The Hotel Zoo in Berlin wins the “Hotel Property of the Year 2015” award
The prize was awarded during a hotelforum gala night on 7 October. Eligible to apply for the award were hotels that opened between January 2014 and June 2015 and that stand out because of a combination of architecture, design and innovation. The head of the hotelforum jury, Andreas Martin says: “The jury has been won over by Hotel Zoo Berlin, which has made its mark as a unique product in the saturated Berlin hotel market. On top of that, the aging building was completely renovated by the new owners, so that the newly positioned hotel has been lifted to an entirely new level, fully fitting to its location on Kurfürstendamm.”
The 123-year-old Hotel Zoo Berlin was a VIP hotel during the 1950s, in particular during the Berlinale film festival. The motto of the new design concept was “creating a personal atmosphere for personalities”. This theme becomes clear through a powerful feeling of space in the lobby, and is reflected in the individually created 131 rooms and 14 suites and in the elevator, in which cameras flash during the ride up. The American designer Dayna Lee orchestrated the interior decoration, using a love of detail that did not allow the building to lose touch with its historical character. APPIA is delighted to be able to add Hotel Zoo Berlin to its list of references. The company was responsible for the interior of the rooms and suites and the public areas. We at APPIA extend our appreciation for the praise we received from the owner, Mr Weingärtner, and for the great collaboration.
The prize for „Europe`s most beautiful mountain hotel
The Jury of the magazine GEO declares the:
HOTEL GIARDINO MOUNTAIN IN CHAMPFÉR-ST.MORITZ
to be Europe`s most beautiful hotel 2015.
This title was awarded this year for the ninth time by a jury of tourism experts and journalists from all over Europe. APPIA was delighted to hear about the award for this successful hotel project. On 9th December 2011 we finished transforming the Chesa Guardalei into the hotel Giardino Mountain. The remodelling of the whole building complex was made possible by the great cooperation with the architects, out motivated partners, and the decision makers. We worked particularly closely with the Swiss architect Mr. Roland Hinzer. Collaborating with Mr. Hinzer was extremely pleasant and satisfying. It was thanks to his great work experience, and fast pragmatic decision making that the whole project could be implemented so precisely and smoothly.
The high quality refurbishment of the public area of the hotel were carried out in record time between June and early December 2011. The colours and some of the design elements match those of the Giardino Group. The modern, Alpine lifestyle conveys lightness and vitality. The hotel managers, Daniela and Philippe Frutiger, impressed us with their enthusiasm and charisma. Ms. Frutiger was responsible for the spa area`s sensuous design, and she was delighted with the outcome. APPIA designed the entrance area, the lounge with bar, two different restaurants, a “Stüberl” in Alpine design, the spa area, a so called Freestyle Academy, and the Kids`Club. APPIA was thus responsible for organising and executing the refurbishment of all the public areas. APPIA says “thank you” for the delightful project and the collegial cooperation.
Hotel Zoo Berlin – selected as Top Performer (AA)
The AGHZ and Treugast recently mingled with the guests at the Hotel Zoo Berlin, which was only reopened at the end of last year, and thoroughly scrutinised the establishment.
The result is – the Hotel Zoo scored an average of 87%, and the design was awarded 100%.
APPIA, together with the American designer Dayna Lee, was responsible for the complete renovation and furnishing of the 131 rooms, 14 suits and the entire public area. We are delighted to have helped the hotel regain its “star status” of the 1920s and 1950s.
Hotel Property of the Year 2013
On the 9th October, at the annual “Hotel Forum” in the Bayerischer Hof in Munich, the 2nd place for the best hotel property of 2013 was awarded to the
BERGHEIM 41 – Hotel im Alten Hallenbad (Hotel in the former public baths) in Heidelberg.
We are very proud of this result, as Appia was responsible for the interior architecture and interior design of the hotel. The hotel is one of the building blocks in the successful revitalization of a heritage-protected inner-city building project. It is a newly-constructed building integrated into the old structure of an indoor swimming pool. Appia's interior design of the building is modern and tailored to businesspeople, who appreciate this up-to-date professional style. As the proprietor said, the number of bookings show just how much customers like the new design.
