A new-build hotel project dedicated to wine: Terra Saar Wine Resort & Spa sits among the vineyards with a view of Saarburg Castle. The hotel focuses on two experiences, which also appear in its logo: wine and relaxation. Appia translated these two themes into the interior design. From the outside, the new building’s terracotta façade and round arches recall a Roman villa. The interior architecture picks up these elements and carries them through the fit-out, furniture and decorative details. It keeps the elegance of the Roman model but reinterprets it in a contemporary way that suits a modern hotel operation. The colour palette draws on the tones of the grapevines to create a regional connection. From the guest rooms and public areas to the spa, Appia is responsible for interior architecture and FF&E.
The rooms are deliberately understated so that the eye goes to the landscape. The bed faces the window and the TV stays in the background. A real eye-catcher is the curved headboard, which partly stands free of the wall.

The spa is on the lower level, and the hillside site lets it open out towards the valley. Natural-stone finishes, warm lighting and arched niches give a calm atmosphere to the indoor-outdoor pool, saunas, treatment and relaxation rooms and the Longevity Center. Guests will also find a bistro and a small shop in the spa reception area.
In the restaurants, the design breaks with the hotel’s style on purpose to make dining more of an experience. The two restaurants, the private dining area and the central marché-style buffet each have a character of their own.
The pizzeria is also open to outside guests, and its flamboyant interior design deliberately sets it apart from the rest of the hotel. A graphic black-and-white tile-look pattern runs from the walls to the counter. Colourful wallpapers and coloured glass lamps create a lively, relaxed atmosphere. Wall lights shaped like climbing monkeys add a touch of humour.
Instead of a classic reception, guests arrive in a living room overlooking the castle. They check in on the sofa by tablet, and the reception desk also serves as the bar. The centrepiece is a curved, free-form sofa whose backrest is made of round arches. The wine lounge is all about wine: backlit wine racks and climate-controlled cabinets show off the bottles, and the high tables get guests talking to each other. In the library, colourful patterned wallpaper in arched niches adds a bold accent.
20 »Wingertshäuschen« (vineyard cottages) are spread across the slope below the main building. They are a modern take on the traditional vineyard huts that once gave winegrowers shelter. Lots of wood and warm colours make them feel cosy. Kitchens, headboards, built-in wardrobes, tables and much more are made in Appia’s own furniture workshop. Some cottages also have a gallery level, which gives them room for up to 4 people.
